The Horseman Who Started It All
The dust, the open range, the feel of a steady horse beneath him—that’s how Ed Hamilton Rosales grew up. Raised in Ranger, Texas, he’s the son of a farrier who worked with large breed horses. His childhood was spent on the back of a quarter horse, experiencing firsthand the freedom and responsibility that come with the Western way of life. His nearest neighbor was 16 miles away.
By the time he was six years old, he was already bull riding and roping. Horses and the Western lifestyle were woven into his DNA.
Like many ranch kids, he figured his future was already set: working cattle, training horses, and living the life he was raised in. But as he got older, he realized something… there were deeper problems in the community he loved.
Ed took his skills to Texas A&M University, where he studied Agribusiness, sharpening his understanding of the business side of ranching. Eventually, his focus shifted—not away from horses, but toward protecting the people who rely on them. That led him to SUNY Upstate Medical Center, where he studied public health with a focus on rural communities—giving him an even deeper understanding of the challenges Western horse owners face.
How We Protect
Seeing the Gaps, Taking Action
About ten years ago, Ed saw a problem he couldn’t ignore. Working with food security organizations and running a major rodeo organization, he spent years deeply involved with ranchers, rodeo competitors, trainers, and equine business owners. And time after time, he saw the same issue: The people who wake up before dawn, who rely on their horses to get the job done, who build their lives around this way of living—were either underinsured or had no coverage at all. Some had been sold policies that didn’t actually fit their needs. Others had been ignored entirely by agents who didn’t understand the first thing about Western horses or the people who ride them. Worst of all, some had been left hanging for years—no check-ins, no updates, no real support. One conversation made it painfully clear. A rancher told Ed that his insurance company had never set foot on his land. Not once. They’d used drones to take aerial images of his property and insured only what they could see from the sky. No one asked about his barn, his indoor riding arena, or his livestock pens. No one bothered to walk his operation. That didn’t sit right. And for Ed, that was the final straw.
Why Western Horse Owners Deserve Better
Western riders, ranchers, and trainers don’t just own horses—they depend on them. Western horses? Not just for show. They work. They cut cattle, rope steers, run barrels, work the ranch, and power rodeo events in ways most insurers simply don’t understand. Yet big corporate insurance firms lump them all into generic equine policies, failing to account for the risks, responsibilities, and realities of the Western way of life. Ed saw what was missing: a company built specifically for Western equestrians and equine businesses. So, he created Riderless Horse. Not just another insurance agency—but a company designed to fill the gap and offer real protection for the Western world.
Riderless Horse: Insurance That Stands by You
From day one, Riderless Horse was built with one rule: “We don’t insure what we haven’t seen.”
If you’ve got stables in Texas and Wyoming, we’re on a plane to visit and document them. If your insurance company hasn’t checked in on you in years, we’re changing that. And if you’ve been burned by policies that didn’t hold up when you needed them most, we’re here to prove that insurance doesn’t have to be a necessary evil—it can be a trusted partner. This isn’t about policies. It’s about people. It’s about riders, ranchers, competitors, and trainers who deserve coverage that actually makes sense for the work they do. We look after you because we’re one of you. And if that means showing up at your rodeo or ranch to check in, don’t be surprised to see us on the sidelines.

Riderless Horse was built to close the dangerous gaps in Western horse insurance. We provide comprehensive, rider-first coverage with a hands-on approach—ensuring that ranchers, rodeo competitors, and Western equine businesses get insurance that fits their world, not a corporate template.
